31st week in Japan

With God, all things are possible

Inline image 1

Dear Family and Friends,

It is such a privilege to be able to write you on this beautiful Monday afternoon. I know I always say this, but I still feel like the time continues to go by at the speed of lightning, and there is no slowing it down. This last week has been such a humbling week for me and has helped me realize how much we truly need the Savior's atonement always. I have realized that responsibilities just keep getting bigger and bigger during your life as a missionary; however, at the same time, the mission only continues to bring more joy into my life. This past week has been a week full of recognizing that anything is possible with God's help.

My last companion Elder Tanaka and I went to the Matsuyama train station on Wednesday morning and said our goodbyes. He will be an awesome missionary in his new area. I will sure miss him. From there another elder and I took a bus ride over to a place near the mission home. We were not able to make it all the way there in one day, so we had to stay over night at an apartment in an area close by. At the apartment I met with Elder Smith and some other missionaries. It was so good to see how Elder Smith has been doing. Maybe someday we will be companions. We then woke up the next morning and headed to the mission home to pick up our new trainees. We received some training on what we should be doing as trainers, met our new companions, and headed back home to our areas.

My new companion's name is Elder Philburn. He is from Tennessee and loves cross country and track. He also likes cooking, which is good because I am not very good at it haha. He was excited to see our area and get to work. Elder Philburn has such great faith and is willing to do what the Lord has asked him to. On our first day of full work together we went out Streeting right after our study time. He had so much faith that as I was talking to someone he walked right over to someone sitting down and sat down next to him. He ended up teaching that man a lesson and gave him a Book of Mormon to read. He is so full of faith and I am very excited to see the miracles that will be happening this transfer!

President Welch has set some pretty high standards for us with the new standard of getting a baptism a week; however, I know without a doubt in my mind that this is possible. We have all heard about the prophecies for Japan, and if you haven't I recommend you look them up. One thing that I was thinking about recently is that the kanji for Kobe is 神戶. 神 means God and 戶 means door. The Kanji for Kobe actually means God's door. The Lord's work is being hastened. We can see miracles happen in this land of Japan. I am grateful to be a servant for the Lord at this time and to be part of this marvelous work.

My Ponderizing scripture for last week was John 14:15. "If ye love me; keep my commandments." We can truly show our love for God by doing what he has asked us to do. Keeping his commandments. It is a gift to be able to follow his commandments and show our love for him. In turn he promises us with safety and blessings.

Questions:

1. My new companion is so great! He is American, from Tennessee. He has such great faith! I am excited to see what things are going to happen this transfer.

2. Training is a bit more work, but a lot of fun. Also being district leader I will prepare for district meetings on Friday and have follow ups with the other missionaries in the district, but It is a lot of fun. I am excited to be working hard this transfer. When you are working your hardest you have the most fun.

3. When Elder Tanka moved out we were able to clear out a ton of junk out of the apartment. We have to take out a lot of different things, and the garbage in Japan is so complex, so it will be a little bit of work, but it is going to look a lot better. It is going fairly well though.

4. The language is getting better. I still struggle to communicate fully and I have a ton of room for improvement, but it is slowly getting easier. I hope over the next few transfers being senior companion will put me in positions that my Japanese will just have to get good or I won't be able to survive haha.

5. I don't think they have the Easter bunny here in Japan. They know about Easter for sure, but I don't know if it is really celebrated much here in Japan. I doubt that it is.

6. I don't think they have time changes either here in Japan. They might, but I don't think so.

Thank you to everyone for all that you do. Know that Heavenly Father loves each and every one of you. You are a son or daughter of God. This gospel is true and full of joy. Have a great week! Love you,

Elder Hirschi ハーシ長老

30th week in Japan

If it is the Lord's Will, it can be done

Inline image 1
Dear Family and Friends,

It is so good to be able to write to each of you on this beautiful Monday evening. The weather has had a drastic change and went from freezing cold one day, to hot the next. It is funny how the weather works here in Uwajima. Anyways, I hope that you are all doing very well. This afternoon my companion and I were headed over to another area next to Uwajima called Kihokucho, when we got a called from President Welch on the phone. Because of the new transfer calls, whenever someone either becomes a ZL, or becomes a trainer we get a call from President Welch. I thought for sure that my companion was going to be a zone leader in a new area. President Welch told my companion he would be transferring and then told him to hand me the phone. He told me that I would be training a new missionary here in Uwajima. I was pretty shocked when he told me that. I feel like I am still a brand new missionary. I have only been out here for a few months and am still getting used to all this missionary stuff. However, I know that with the Lord's help that it will be possible. When he told me the news I immediately thought of my trainers. I thought about how they were such good trainers for me, so I am going to be the best trainer I can for this new missionary. Because the only other elders in our district are the Matsuyama elders and Hasegawa choro ,the couple missionary, I will also be the district leader for the district. Without a doubt I will be relying on the Lord every day 24 hours a day this transfer. I know that he will provide a way for me to be able to accomplish such a great task. 1 Nephi 3:7.

This week has been full of a lot of hard work and many miracles along the way.  At the beginning of the week we had a lesson with one of our very strong progressing investigators named Ishiki san. She will be headed to Kyoto for college in a month, but she accepted the invitation to be baptized on May 1st this year. It is a miracle to see God's work moving forward in Japan. I have been amazed to see the work hastening even over the small amount of time that I have been on my mission so far. We are working hard to reach President Welch's vision of a baptism a week. I know that through relying on Christ and his atonement that this can be made possible.

We have been able to teach many people this week, and at the end of the week we went over to Matusyama for another Zone Training Meeting. We received a lot of spiritually uplifting training from our zone leaders and sister training leaders. Afterwards Elder Miyagi and I went on exchange for the day. It is crazy to know that he will be heading home here in a few days. I will sure miss that guy. It was fun playing some basketball with him and getting to know him. Saturday night we had chihobutaikai (I forgot what it is called in English, district conference or something). President Welch came and spoke to all of the people in the Matsuyama district. He is always such a powerful speaker. You can for sure tell that he has been called of God to direct the work in Kobe Japan.

Fast Sunday was pushed to next Sunday because we had our chihobutaikai on Sunday. We heard from Sister Welch and President Welch again. We actually skyped at the church in Uwajima. It didn't work the greatest, but we were able to hear everything. It was an interesting experience. Because Elder Tanaka figured that he would be leaving he has been saying his goodbyes to everyone. We said goodbye to the Brechtefeld family on Sunday night. It is tough saying goodbye to people after you have been their friend for 6 months. Elder Tanaka liked it here in Uwajima, but 6 months is a fairly long time, so he is excited to have new experiences in a new area.

Because this past week has been so busy, I forgot to do my ponderizing. I will have to repent and pick a new scripture for next week. Today Elder Tanaka and I went to a place called Yusu. It was a very fun P day. We had to bike about 1 and a half hours to get there, but it was a very beautiful place. I will send some pictures. Next transfer is going to be a big change. I know that as to the things of myself I am weak, but with God's help I can be made strong. We truly can receive God's strength through prayer. What a gift it is to be able to ask and receive based upon our faithfulness. If you ever need God's help he is there to help you. Heavenly Father loves each of us. I testify that to each of you from the bottom of my heart. He loves you. If you don't know or can't feel whether or not God loves you read John 3:16 and pray about it. This gospel is true. I am grateful for the joy of this gospel. The Book of Mormon is God's word. Through reading it and going to God in prayer we will be blessed. I testify these things to you in the name sacred name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Questions:

1. Yes, I read very frequently from the Japanese scriptures. I love being able to read the scriptures in Japanese and English side by side. It is fairly easy to teach the English classes. It is mostly just conversation, so not that tough. It is a ton of fun too.

2. One of the members in our ward likes to do karate. I have seen a little bit of golf here and there. Also a lot of people like to play soccer.

3. How to prepare for a mission. I could write at least a whole 5 paragraph email on just this one question haha. I think that reading scriptures and going to Heavenly Father in prayer daily is the biggest suggestion I would make. Through praying and reading the scriptures you gain so much knowledge and feel so much closer to God. (Not too much time today, but if you want more suggestions I will email you next time)

4. Yes, the missionary couple in our area are from Japan and are Japanese. Before they served they lived close to my last area, Fushimi. They don't go out finding that often, but do every now and then. They mostly drive out to far away places to teach less actives that we cannot teach because they live so far.

5. Uwajima has been the area where I have received the most referrals. We have received a referral almost once every other week this transfer.

6. The mission president goes to zone conference and teaches us, but zone training meetings are just the missionaries.

Thank you all so much for your love and support. I can truly feel the strength of all your prayers. I did want to mention that I will be praying for Davier everyday. I hope that he will be alright. Love you all,

Elder Hirschi

Knowledge of the Atonement

Inline image 1

Dear Family and Friends,

I feel like this transfer just started, and yet it is already coming to an end. It is incredible to me how fast time flies by when you are in God's service. This transfer has been full of miracles. It has been full of some of the biggest ups in my mission, and at the same time some of the biggest downs; however, through relying on Christ I have found so much help in my daily missionary life. I have enjoyed being able to serve the people here in Uwajima so much. I have seen this work moving forward, and I know it will only continue to keep pressing forward from here.

In one of my previous emails I mentioned about the new Book of Mormon challenge that we are doing together as a mission. We are reading the Book of Mormon and highlighting anything that we find about the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I have already learned so much about Jesus Christ's atonement and it has only been a couple of weeks. Jesus Christ's atonement is something that we cannot comprehend everything about in this life, but as we grow to learn more and more about it we want to share the knowledge that we have gained with others. In PMG there is a passage that says "As your understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ grows, your desire to share the gospel will increase. You will feel, as Lehi did, the “great … importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth” (2 Nephi 2:8)." I have already come to recognize that I have gained a greater desire to share about Christ's atonement through reading this challenge.

Last week during district meeting we all talked about our favorite parts that we have learned about Christ's atonement so far. Elder Miyagi our zone leader shared with us 2 Nephi 2:4. "And thou hast beheld in thy youth his glory; wherefore, thou art blessed even as they unto whom he shall minister in the flesh; for the Spirit is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. And the way is prepared from the fall of man, and salvation is free." The footnote for the word free has written the word grace. This scripture has changed my perspective on how loving Jesus Christ was to perform the atonement. Because he was willing to go through more pain than any man can imagine we are able to be saved. Through the savior's grace salvation is literally made free. All we have to do is use the atonement of Christ.

I would like to invite all of you to continue to read from the Book of Mormon daily and look for Christ's atonement. I promise you that if you do you will find things that you have never thought of before. Lately I have been reading the Isaiah chapters in 2 Nephi, and they truly do become easier to understand when you look through them with a purpose in mind. 是非やてみてください(Zehi yate mite kudasai)。(sorry I don't really know how to say this in English other than "please try it and see.")

My Ponderizing scripture for this week was one of my all time favorite scriptures. D and C 18:10. The worth of souls is Great in the sight of God. I love this scripture because every single one of Heavenly Father's sons and daughters are precious in his eyes. Let's help these people who don't know about his gospel. He loves everyone of us.

Questions:

1. Next Monday we get transfer calls. I am fairly certain that I will be staying in Uwajima. I really doubt that I will be leaving. I do hope that I will stay here for a little while longer. I love these people. It is completely different from my last 2 areas, but I do love it here.

2. My favorite place in Japan I have been so far is probably Okayama Nishi 岡山西. I have loved all of my areas, but I feel like those people were like family. I miss that place a bunch.

3. I don't think the Japanese kids get a spring break. School is quite a bit different in Japan. I am pretty sure there is no St. Patrick's day either.

4. Uwajima has really good Mikans. Which is just like small oranges that are super easy to peel. Also my companion Tanaka 長老 is a pretty good cook, so we eat various things. We mostly just shop at cheap places. We don't have to buy too much because the members give us a lot of food. The place that we go to is called Giomu and it is not very far from our apartment. Maybe 10 to 15 minutes or so.

5. Getting used to missionary life and overcoming fear has probably been the toughest part of the mission so far. I feel like for the most part it hasn't been that difficult other than the language. I mean working all day every day, biking everywhere, and knocking on doors gets a little tiring, but you get used to it.

7. My clothes are holding up great thanks. Yes the apartment is getting cleaner. It wasn't as bad as Okayama Nishi so not too much too worry about haha.

Thanks for everything. I love you all and appreciate all of your love and support. Keep enduring to the end and have a great week!

Always learning

Inline image 1

Dear Family and Friends,

こんいちわ!皆さん最近はどうですか?
How has everyone been lately? I hope that you are all doing well. 田中長老 (Elder Tanaka) and I have been working hard to help out the people of Uwajima. This past week we have found a lot of new investigators. Because Uwajima is such a large area, we get to travel all over the place to meet with investigators and find those people who have been prepared to hear the gospel. I feel like this transfer has been going by too fast, but at the same time I have learned many things that will be of great importance throughout my mission. I know that by being obedient that we can help those who have been prepared to hear the gospel, to be able to reach baptism.

On our P day last week we were able to go over to Matsuyama for a companion exchange. During the day Elder Miyagi (one of the zone leaders) wanted to play some basketball. So we rode over to a nearby park and got to play basketball for a while. It was so much fun! He is really good too. One thing that is interesting about the fields and some of the basketball courts in Japan, is that they are all dirt. Playing on a dirt court was fairly interesting, but it was still way fun to be able to play. After basketball I exchanged with the other zone leader Elder Fletcher and we went to work.

One big thing that I feel like I have learned over this past week is the importance of listening. Even though I still struggle with understanding what these people are saying, I have found that as I listen intensely I can understand more and more. It is pretty tough to keep up with conversations still, but as I have learned to listen I have started to understand more little by little. I really do love these people and want to help them. I still feel fear all the time to be speaking in a language that I don't know, but I know that it doesn't matter because as long as I try to say what I have been called to say that God will help me with the rest.

It is interesting to me how different the mission life is in different parts of the mission. In my last couple of areas because they were both city we would go street contacting all the time. In Uwajima it is not easy to go street contacting because of how country side it is. I have been working on improving my way of doing housing contacts a lot here in Uwajima. Also there is hardly any youth in this ward, which is probably why it's hard to keep up with the older people's conversations because they speak a lot differently. On Saturday we were able to have a meal appointment with the youth in the ward, which was a lot of fun. We made something called nabe, which is just a bunch of different foods mixed and boiled in a pot. I hope that we can work more with the youth because they are the future of the church in Japan.

My Ponderizing scripture for this week was actually my favorite scripture in the Book of Mormon. Alma 33:23. I love this scripture because everyone's faith starts out small, but as we work to grow our faith it becomes strong. "And even all this can ye do if he will."

Questions:

1. My bike is holding up great. It is a really nice bike. I think the breaks are getting a little bit worn down, so I might have to replace them again. I think by cleaning it every now and then it will remain in good condition. Yes it is safe. There has been some fairly long downhill areas, but nothing dangerous.

2. I like going to Yoshida because it is right next to the ocean. We have to ride up a huge hill to get there, but it is really beautiful. Yes there is a castle. We actually ran up to the Uwajima castle one morning. It is way pretty and you can see all of Uwajima from the top.

3. The members are incredible. I love them so much. They also give us a ton of food on Sunday's. The members here are pretty good at giving referrals too.

4. The sister missionaries are awesome. They work so hard and are super nice. I haven't seen any couple missionaries until I came to Uwajima. I don't think there are very many couple missionaries in this mission. Actually I may have seen some couple missionaries in Fushimi one Sunday, but that's about it.

5. Things have been going awesome! I love my companion. He is way funny and helps out a lot. Sometimes it's tough to communicate, but I have learned a bit of Japanese from him and I hope I can keep learning more so I can talk to him and these people more.

6. I think there is a washer in every apartment, but I think Okayama Nishi is one of the very few apartments that have a dryer in the mission. I don't think there are very many dryers in the apartments in this mission. I sure do miss it haha.

Love you all so much. Thanks for the love and the support. Have a 素晴らしい week!!

The atonement of Jesus Christ

Inline image 1

My Dear Family and Friends,

It has been an incredible week here in Uwajima (like every week). We
are truly seeing God's work move forward, and are praying our hearts
out for these people every day. Uwajima is such an incredible place.
Yes it is very countryside compared to my last two areas, but that
doesn't mean we can't see miracles here. We have been able to teach so
many more people by working towards President Welch's vision. The
biggest thing that I have grown to recognize this week is by relying
on Jesus Christ's atonement we can overcome anything.

Last week I mentioned that it was pretty tough trying to speak
Japanese 24/7, so I prayed my heart out to Heavenly Father for help.
He answered my prayer. To be honest I haven't really seen my Japanese
get much better since that prayer, but I have felt the strength of
Jesus Christ's atonement. Christ knows us. He knows us each
individually. He knows all of the trials, pains, sufferings, every
thing we have gone through and will go through. Serving a mission is
tough, and I know without a doubt that the savior knows that 100 times
more than I do. Jesus Christ has constantly given me strength to
overcome the obstacles on my mission, even when they were in ways I
would not have expected. I know that Jesus Christ performed the
atonement so that he could know each of us. He is always there for
you. If you ever need strength or are going through a difficult time,
please ask for his help. I know that he will give you help.

We had zone conference last week on Wednesday. I love zone conferences
so much. We get to receive training from President and sister Welch
and the APs. President Welch is just so full of wisdom. At zone
conference we were given a new challenge from President Welch. He
talked a lot about the importance of the atonement of Jesus Christ. We
just learned about Jesus Christ by reading the bible challenge, so
President Welch's new challenge is for us to read the Book of Mormon
and look for anything about the atonement. The atonement is something
that is beyond our comprehension in this life, but as we study about
it, we can gain a better understanding of what the atonement truly is.
I thought it was so cool that President Welch talked about the
atonement because that is something I felt had a huge impact on me
this past week.

Like always Sunday is the best day of the week. I just love meeting
with the members. They are all so kind and loving. This week I was
gifted with the opportunity on giving a talk about Faith in Jesus
Christ in sacrament meeting. Like my last area I have been able to
talk in church the first 3 Sunday's here also. It is a gift to be able
to testify of the savior so often as a missionary. Later on Sunday
night we went to the Breaktfelt's home. They are such strong members,
but a couple of kids in the family are struggling a little. So my
companion and I had the opportunity of giving a blessing to 2 of their
kids. What an incredible gift it is from God to be able to use his
Priesthood! God's Priesthood is such a powerful tool and can really
help you feel the power of the Holy Ghost. It was a great experience
to be able to help out their family.

My Ponderizing scripture for this week was 2 Nephi 2:6. "Wherefore,
redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of
grace and truth." Because of Jesus Christ's grace we can be saved in
the life after this. I am so grateful for Jesus Christ. I am grateful
that he endured through the atonement so that we would be able to live
with God again. He has so much love for each of us. I know that he is
our savior and redeemer. I testify that to each of you in his sacred
name amen.

Challenge this week: remember the savior and his sacrifice for you
throughout the week. If you ever need his help or know of someone who
does, ask for his help for whoever may need it.

Questions:

1. For Valentines some of the people in the ward handed out chocolates. My
companion and I also made some homemade chocolates for the ward and
handed them out. I did get the package. Thank you so much!
2. Yes, we have been working on cleaning the apartment up. It looks a ton better
now. There is always room for improvement, but it is way better than
it was before.
3. The language does seem to be getting a bit easier. I have been able
to communicate with my companion fairly well. There are times when I can't
understand everything he says, but I have really seen improvement. I
know that it is all because of God's help.
4. The members feed us a lot. They don't really invite us over for meals too
often, although we did have a meal at the Breaktfelt's yesterday, but
they do give us a lot of food on Sundays.
5. Hahahaha actually yes. We went to a sushi place and I ate some
fries with chocolate and whip cream on it. It was actually pretty
good. It is fairly interesting what Japan thinks of American food and
culture.
6. My companion is awesome! He has a family of 6. 1 older brother serving in a
different mission in Japan. Two younger sisters, one who will be
headed to BYU Hawaii soon. He is from Sendai, which is near Tokyo. He
loves to listen to music and dance. He is actually really good at
dancing, and we have found some investigators who may have interest
off of him teaching them how to dance. I will send a video of him
teaching them how to dance.

Thank you all for your love and support. I love being able to write to
you each week. Have an awesome week everyone. I love you all,

Hirschi 長老

Faith of the members!

Inline image 1
Dear Family and Friends,

It has been another great week here in Japan. I love being able to
serve these people. Like I said last week I transferred over to
Uwajima, and I already love the people here. Uwajima is actually only
a branch, so it is a little bit smaller than the other areas I have
been too, but the ward members here are incredible. This week has been full of a lot of biking and a lot of hard work. I can't say that it
has been easy, but I can for sure say that it has been worth it.

At the beginning of the past week we went to a completely different
area in Uwajima. Uwajima is a very countryside part of the mission, so
it is completely the opposite of my past two areas. In order to get to
the area that we went to, you have to ride up a ton of huge hills. It
took us about an hour to get there, and the people that we wanted to
visit weren't home or couldn't visit. That was a bit of a bummer, but
it didn't get our hopes down. We went housing around the area for a
little while and found a few good potential investigators. One more
thing about Uwajima is that we cannot go streeting. When we don't have
lessons set up it is all tracting. I have been able to work on my
housing approaches in Japanese. My companion has helped me out a lot with learning how to house. Anyways on the way back from the far town in Uwajima, we road back down a huge hill in the rain, which was way sketchy. It was a pretty fun experience though. One I am sure I won't forget.

On Friday we had zone conference. We rode over to Matsuyama with the couple missionaries in our area. They are super nice and really good
missionaries. We learned a lot about becoming Preach my Gospel
missionaries. We also learned a lot about working with the members and
seeing miracles. I know that as we pray for God's help and try our
best, that we can see miracles here in Japan. It was fun to meet
together with all of the missionaries there, and I got to see a few
missionaries from my MTC district, who I hadn't seen since I left the
MTC. It was really good to see them.

One thing that will really be good for me this transfer is that I am
with a Japanese companion. I didn't realize how hard it would be to
communicate with him. I hope that my Japanese can improve a lot this
transfer. I really want to be able to communicate with these people,
but I feel like I can't express myself the way I would like. I have
never prayed harder in my life before for God's help. I have really
seen his hand in my life this past week. A little earlier in the past
week I woke up one morning feeling pretty down about my language
abilities. I prayed my heart out to Heavenly Father for his help. I
was having a pretty rough time, but I know that God loves every single
one of his children. That morning during companionship study my
companion chose to sing be still my soul. Never have I felt God's love
more at that time than ever before. I know without a doubt that God
loves us. He is watching out for us. He wants us to succeed in this
life and in the life to come.

The members of Uwajima are incredible. On Sunday I was given the
chance to bare my testimony again. I love that I have the opportunity
to bare my testimony in church once a month. It is truly a privilege
to say how I feel about the gospel. We heard so many powerful
testimonies that Sunday. About half way through the meeting a little
old lady named Sister Ootani stood up to bare her testimony. She is
the nicest old lady ever, and loves the missionaries. She always talks
about how she remembers my name when she sees me, even though she is slightly losing her memory. When she stood up to bare her testimony she declared to everyone that she knew the church is true. She knew it. She said it in such a powerful way that I just couldn't help from being brought to tears. I cannot believe how much faith these people have in the gospel. They are such incredible people.

Questions:

1. I was able to pack everything in the suitcases I have still, thanks so much. I am good on my bags. I might send a few things home at the end of the transfer if you don't mind.

2. We take our sheets with us when we transfer, but they have the
futons (the little beds on the ground) for us when we transfer.

3. It isn't too weird not having a regular bed. At first I thought it was a little different, but I think that it is actually pretty comfortable now. It is plenty warm, especially here in Uwajima. Kyoto was freezing, but Uwajima is pretty warm.

4. I love Uwajima so much. I will admit there are a few things that
are different and a little challenging, but I love these people and
this area. We haven't really had time to go check out any places, but
we have sure traveled to some far places to visit people. Some of the
hills here are crazy!

5. It is really good that I have a Japanese companion. I have noticed a difference. I feel like I am learning faster, but it is pretty tough. My companion is pretty straightforward about correcting me, which helps. I think he gets a little frustrated sometimes when I cannot communicate with him, but I totally understand why. It has helped me a lot though in being able to learn the language.

6. The members here are absolutely incredible! I love them all. The Branch President is pretty cool. He is extremely good at playing ping pong. I also love Ootani shimai and her strong testimony. We have a ton of great members in this branch.

Thank you everyone for reading my emails. I have to admit I forgot to
do my Ponderizing this week because it has been a crazy busy week, but
I will repent and pick a new scripture for next week. I love you all.
Have a great week,
